ISSUE 01 OUT NOW!
ATACAN TUTULMAZAY (2000) didn’t find art, it found him the moment his father gifted his old camera in 2018. Coming from a technical background, photography was the first time art made sense and made him a part of it. It gave him a way to pay attention without having to explain himself. A way to focus on the world around him, while keeping the lens turned away from himself. In his work, TUTULMAZAY moves quietly between the real and the imagined, not trying to impress, just trying to catch something honest.
### Could you broadly describe this project: what inspired you and what is it about?
“This project stemmed from a period of time where I was feeling very stuck in the art I was crafting. I wanted to create self portraits but didn’t want to include myself in the mix. And the flatbed scanner was something I picked up from a thrift store to scan my sketches for my graduation project.
In both design and photography I believe in functional abuse of the equipment we use. I believe they should only be blurry lines, a mere medium of expression. So I captured the main tools I used to transfer my thoughts as art, and then played with them, almost dancing with the scanner, flowing with its moving sensor diodes to create the compositions you see. It created a visual choreography stemming from my actions.”
